Comments are closed for everyone, not just free subscribers. I don't have the emotional capacity right now to deal with the trolls who come just to yell at me and other readers.

Those aggressive attacks are distracting for me personally (they require effort to process and move on from), and I also feel an obligation to protect readers from the toxic discussion environment they create. I don't have the time or inclination to moderate comment threads to delete the troll comments and leave the thoughtful, substantive comments up.

If/when I have the capacity to absorb the troll comments better, and/or moderate the threads to delete the troll comments, I enable the comment section.
